Biography
Kevin Kühnert is a German politician and prominent member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), who served as a member of the Bundestag from 2021 to 2025. He was born on 1 July 1989 in West Berlin, Germany.
In 2008, he graduated from Beethoven-Gymnasium in Berlin-Lankwitz, where he was also the student body’s spokesperson. He then fulfills a Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (Voluntary Social Year) at an organization supporting Berlin’s children and youth.
He worked as a call center agent for more than three years. Then he attended the Free University of Berlin to study journalism and communication science, but did not complete his studies. He started a political science study at the University of Hagen in 2016 but dropped out to concentrate on his political career. In the Berlin state parliament, he worked for SPD MPs Dilek Kolat and Melanie Kühnemann, which was his first notable political work experience.
At the age of 16, Kühnert joined the SPD in 2005. He got involved in party youth politics, and from 2012 to 2015, he chaired the Jusos’ Berlin branch. He took over as deputy federal chairman of the Jusos in 2015, where he was in charge of matters including taxation, pensions, and structural policy in addition to dealing with migration and right-wing extremism.
He was chosen as the federal head of the Jusos during their national congress in Saarbrücken in November 2017. He received a resounding majority of the vote to succeed Johanna Uekermann.
He became one of the five deputy party chairmen after endorsing Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans’ victorious 2019 campaign for the party leadership.
Before the federal elections in January 2021, he resigned as leader of Jusos to make room for Jessica Rosenthal. He was appointed as the SPD’s direct candidate for the Tempelhof-Schöneberg seat in Berlin on December 16, 2020. In the federal election held in 2021, he was elected to the Bundestag.
In 2023, he received 92% of the vote to be reelected at the party conference. Kühnert said on October 7, 2024, that he will not be running for the Bundestag again on February 23, 2025, after resigning as secretary general owing to health concerns.
