Biography

Klaus Schwab is a German mechanical engineer, economist, and the founder of the World Economic Forum (WEF), an influential international organization known for its annual meetings in Davos, Switzerland, that bring together political, business, cultural, and academic leaders to discuss global issues.

He was born on 30 March 1938 in Ravensburg, Germany. He attended a primary school in the Wädenswil neighborhood of Au, Zürich, Switzerland, for the first and second classes.
His family returned to Germany after World War II, and Schwab studied at the Spohn-Gymnasium in Ravensburg until earning his Abitur in 1957. He earned a doctorate in engineering and a mechanical engineering degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1961.

In addition, he obtained a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Fribourg. Henry Kissinger, the future Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, served as a mentor to Schwab while he was a student at Harvard.

Schwab was an honorary professor at the University of Geneva after serving as a professor of business policy from 1972 to 2003. In 1998, he furthered his commitment to worldwide social innovation and development by founding the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship with his wife, Hilde.

Schwab founded the European Management Forum in 1971; in 1987, it changed its name to the World Economic Forum to better represent its expanding global reach.
Under Schwab’s leadership, the WEF established itself as a leading forum for international discussion over the years, covering topics from economic policy and geopolitical disputes to climate change and technology.

Schwab named former Costa Rican President José María Figueres the WEF’s CEO in 2003. However, Figueres left in 2004 because it was discovered that Alcatel had been paying unreported consulting fees. In its 2006 Global Corruption Report, Transparency International mentioned the incident.

The Global Shapers Community was started by Schwab in 2011 to enable young leaders to promote discussion and action on regional and worldwide concerns.

The WEF was officially acknowledged as an international organization by the Swiss government in 2015, confirming its distinct organizational and diplomatic standing.
