On April 28, 2025, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will launch a fresh mediation effort aimed at ending the ongoing Bawku conflict. This initiative is underpinned by a renewed commitment from President John Mahama, who has expressed the government’s support for Otumfuo’s leadership in restoring peace in the troubled region.
Scheduled to run from April 28 to May 1 at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, these peace talks carry significant importance as Bawku has faced long-standing unrest. In a recent statement, Otumfuo emphasized his dedication to facilitating dialogue among conflicting parties.
Security Analyst Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired) has stressed the need for a broader coalition to back Otumfuo’s mediation efforts. In an opinion piece, he recommended that a multi-track diplomacy approach be adopted. This would involve the engagement of diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks, creating a more inclusive strategy for lasting resolution.
Colonel Aboagye warned that traditional diplomacy alone may fall short in addressing the deep-rooted issues that have contributed to the conflict. His call to action highlights the importance of fostering collaborative and innovative solutions.
“Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he added.
As these crucial discussions begin, there is hope that the mediation sessions at Manhyia Palace will pave the way for a new chapter in the quest for peace in Bawku.
