Nikola Pokrivač was a Croatian professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He was born on 26 November 1985. Sadly, he passed away on 18th April 2025.
Career
Pokrivač began playing football with Bratstvo Jurovec, an amateur team in the area of his birthplace. He continued to play youth football for Čakovec and NK Varteks, finally making the move to Varteks’ main squad in the summer of 2004.
He finally moved to Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia’s best team, during the winter break of the 2006–07 season because to his strong performances at Varteks. At his new team, he rapidly established himself as a regular and helped them win the 2007 Croatian league and cup.
Pokrivač signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with AS Monaco, a member of the French Ligue 1 team, on January 30, 2008. He played the entire ninety minutes in Monaco’s 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain on February 23, 2008, marking his league debut.
He made 23 appearances in Ligue 1 at the end of the 2008–09 season. He also contributed one goal to Monaco’s 2-0 victory over Ajaccio in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France on March 4, 2009.
In 2015, Pokrivač was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and recovered before joining Slaven Belupo in Croatia. However, the cancer returned in 2016 and 2017, requiring him to get a bone marrow transplant, which he got from Ana, his mother. He announced his retirement from professional football in November 2017, after completing his final recuperation.
Pokrivač has represented Croatia at the under-17 and under-19 levels, as well as the under-21 national team. From 2001 to 2006, he earned 39 international caps and scored three goals for all Croatian youth national teams.
He was called up to the Croatia national team at the senior level for the first time on May 5, 2008. Pokrivač made five appearances in Croatia’s dismal FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in 2010.
