Johann Wadephul is a seasoned German politician affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and has been a Bundestag member since 2009. He was born on 10 February 1963.

Wadephul attended the Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule to finish his secondary schooling. After graduating from the University of Kiel, he practiced law, specialising in social law and health care legislation, which served as the basis for his subsequent political activity in social affairs.

In 1982, Wadephul joined the CDU. Under Peter Kurt Würzbach, the party’s chairman, he was the state’s secretary general from 1997 to 2000.
Würzbach was replaced as CDU state chairman in 2000 by Wadephul, who remained in that position until 2002. Notably, he supported Bavarian Premier Edmund Stoiber at this period as the CDU’s nominee to run against Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in the federal elections of 2002.

Following the party’s triumph in 2005, Wadephul also joined the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag (state parliament) and rose to the position of head of the CDU parliamentary group. He decided to concentrate on federal politics instead of running for reelection in 2009.

Wadephul, who was elected to the Bundestag in 2009 to represent Rendsburg-Eckernförde, has amassed a sizable parliamentary portfolio since then.

At first, he was a member of the Committee on Social Affairs and Labor. He was appointed chair of the Committee on the Scrutiny of Elections, Immunity, and the Rules of Procedure after the 2013 elections. Wadephul has also played a significant role in the Bundestag’s Council of Elders, which is in charge of parliamentary procedure and committee assignments, as well as the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Wadephul is an expert in foreign policy and has served as a rapporteur for key areas such as the Western Balkans, Iran, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, the Middle East, and the Persian Gulf states. Additionally, he was the German-Belarusian Parliamentary Friendship Group’s Deputy Chairman.
He defied the CDU/CSU majority and voted in support of legalizing same-sex marriage in June 2017.

Along with other lawmakers, he defended CDU head Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Chancellor Angela Merkel against internal criticism in 2019. He co-signed a humanitarian plea to Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, a year later, urging her to help children in Greek migrant camps.
Wadephul openly endorsed Norbert Röttgen as a candidate for party chair before to the 2021 CDU leadership election.

His hardline military policy views were reflected in a 2023 interview with Tagesspiegel, when he defended Ukraine’s ability to employ German-supplied weaponry against targets on Russian territory.
