Armin Laschet is a well-known German politician and was born on February 18, 1961. He is renowned for his commitment to continuity within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and his centrist stance.
Born in Aachen, West Germany, Laschet came from a Walloon family of German-speaking Roman Catholics. He attended the Universities of Munich and Bonn to study law, then worked as a journalist before going into politics.
In 1994, Laschet was elected to the German Bundestag, marking the beginning of his political career. Serving as a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2005 allowed him to increase his influence. In the space of state politics, he joined the North Rhine-Westphalia cabinet in 2005 and advanced to become the state’s chief of the CDU by 2012. Because of his leadership, he was elected Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2017, where he governed in partnership with the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
Laschet won 52.8% of the delegates’ vote to become the CDU’s leader in January 2021, defeating Friedrich Merz in a runoff election. Laschet, a well-known supporter of Angela Merkel’s moderate policies, positioned himself as a “continuity candidate,” stressing party unity. Merkel’s practical attitude was mirrored in his leadership style, especially during em,ergencies like the 2015 immigration crisis.
In April 2021, Laschet’s bid for Chancellor was confirmed as the CDU/CSU candidate following Markus Söder’s concession. Even though he had a lot of expertise and supported Merkel’s ideas, Laschet had a difficult time running for the federal election in September.
