This recent incident adds to the growing list of controversies surrounding the billionaire, who has been a prominent figure in Ghanaian news over the past years.

Peters is known for his ties with the political elite, particularly with the former government, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. His connections have often raised eyebrows, especially considering his involvement in several corruption scandals.

One of the most notable controversies was his role as the owner of Frontiers Healthcare Services Limited, the firm in charge of COVID-19 testing at Kotoka International Airport. In 2022, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, now Ghana’s Foreign Minister, alleged that Peters profited an astonishing GH¢984.7 million (approximately US$130 million) from COVID-19 testing within just 18 months, overshadowing the mere US$8 million earned by the Ghana Airport Company during the same period.

Peters was again thrust into the spotlight in 2023 due to what has been dubbed the ‘Heaven Scandal.’ Ablakwa claimed that Peters acquired 62.14 acres of land at the airport, which was originally valued at over US $6.3 million per 1.7 acres, for a mere US $1.3 per 1.7 acres. This land deal drew heavy criticism and allegations of favoritism, particularly given Peters’ close ties with influential figures in the government, such former President Akuffo Addo.

Beyond his extensive business dealings in Ghana, Ben Peters holds a prominent position in the oil and gas sector across Africa. He is the founder and CEO of Aiteo, heralded as Africa’s largest indigenous oil producer. Additionally, he is at the helm of Bravura Holdings, a vertically integrated mining company involved in developing various mineral resources, including platinum, lithium, steel, copper, and gold across multiple countries in Africa.
