Biography
Sven Hannawald, born on November 9, 1974, in Erlabrunn, Germany, and grew up in Johanngeorgenstadt in the Ore Mountains, is a German former ski jumper.
He began ski jumping with SC Dynamo Johanngeorgenstadt when he was quite young. When he was twelve, he was moved to Klingenthal, Saxony, to continue his training at a special school for young athletes. His family moved to Jettingen-Scheppach, which is close to Ulm, in 1991.
Sven went to the Furtwangen Ski Boarding School there and finished an apprenticeship in communication electronics.
In 1992, Hannawald made his professional debut and immediately became well-known in the sport. Among his first victories were silver medals in the team large hill event at the Nagano Winter Olympics and the 1998 Ski Flying World Championships in Oberstdorf. He earned gold in the team big hill event, silver in the individual large hill event, and sixth overall in the World Cup during the 1998–1999 season at the World Championships in Ramsau.
Hannawald won both the renowned Holmenkollen ski festival and the Ski Flying World Championships in Vikersund in 2000. He won gold in the team big hill event and bronze in the team normal hill event at the World Championships in Lahti in the 2000–01 season.
Hannawald was the World Cup runner-up once more in the 2002–03 season. His historic perfect leap at Willingen, Germany, where he was only the third person at the time to get perfect scores (20 points) from all five judges, was one of the year’s highlights.
In the 2003–04 season, however, his form deteriorated, and his best performance was finishing in fourth place in Trondheim. After this, he had an early season finale.
Hannawald officially disclosed his burnout and subsequent mental therapy on April 29, 2004. Even after recovering, he declared on August 3, 2005, that he no longer wanted to put up with the pressures of elite competition and retired from professional ski jumping.
Hannawald tried other sports after retiring from ski jumping. He signed a two-year deal with TSV Burgau, a striker in the German Kreisliga, on September 26, 2008. Later, he entered the world of motorsports, competing in the ADAC GT Masters for the first time in 2010. Motorsport Arena Oschersleben hosted its inaugural race on April 10, 2010.
