Julia Klöckner is a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician from Germany who has been the German Bundestag’s president since March 25, 2025. Biography
Klöckner was born on December 16, 1972 in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, and grew up in Guldental as the youngest child of a family that made wine. After earning her Abitur in 1992, she enrolled at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz to pursue studies in political science, Catholic theology, and education. In 1998, she completed the first Staatsexamen and obtained a Master of Arts degree.
Klöckner was an editor and journalist before going into politics. In 1995, she became well-known across the country after being chosen to be the German Wine Queen (Deutsche Weinkönigin), a ceremonial position that demonstrated her leadership and communication abilities. Later, she served as editor-in-chief of Sommelier magazine and a journalist at SWR television.
Klöckner joined the CDU and its women’s and youth groups in 1996. She was elected to represent Kreuznach in the German Bundestag in 2002. She advanced swiftly through the ranks and joined several parliamentary committees before taking the role of deputy chairperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
She was named Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Consumer Protection in 2009. She then moved into state politics, rising to the position of CDU leader in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2010 and leading the party in the state elections of 2011 and 2016.
Since 2010, Klöckner has played a significant role in the national leadership of the CDU.
Since 2012, he has been a deputy federal chairman and a member of the party’s executive committee. She was crucial to the creation of CDU policy, especially in the fields of agriculture, consumer protection, and climate policy.
During her tenure as Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection from 2018 to 2021, Klöckner worked to modernize the agriculture industry and strengthen food safety laws.
In 2025, Klöckner was elected President of the Bundestag, securing the support of a majority of MPs.
