Biography
Carla Hinrichs was born in Bremen, Germany, on February 7, 1997. Together with her two younger siblings, she was raised in a small city close to Bremen as the daughter of a mechanical engineer and a curator. She attended Amnesty International while she was a student. Prior to starting her studies in law at the University of Bremen in 2015, she worked as an intern at the Bremen Regional Court after graduating high school. She studied in Portugal as well.
Hinrichs chose to put her legal education on hold before sitting for the first state law exam after relocating to Berlin in the summer of 2021. “Apply the law” in ways that promote social and environmental justice, she said, was her motivating principle. She subsequently clarified that she had only halted her studies, but that ongoing legal proceedings and convictions might prevent her from finishing them.
However, in 2021, she co-founded Letzte Generation (Last Generation), a climate advocacy group. In 2022, the group became well-known for planning road blockades, in which people painted themselves on the streets to express disapproval of the government’s lack of action on climate change. She was regularly featured in media conversations as a full-time activist and press representative.
Several court battles resulted from her activism. She was fined 600 euros in March 2023 by the Tiergarten District Court for coercing someone during a road barricade in Berlin. In April 2022, she was given a 1,800 euro penalty order for a similar blockade in Frankfurt, which was eventually changed to a two-month suspended prison sentence. Her appeal was denied in January 2024 by the Frankfurt am Main Regional Court.
Police raided Hinrichs’ flat in May 2023 after the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an inquiry into her and six other Last Generation members for allegedly organizing a criminal organization.
She was fined 6,000 euros by the Tiergarten District Court in July 2024 for taking part in eleven traffic blockades from August 2021 to May 2023. She was convicted of six counts of resisting police enforcement and seven cases of coercion.
