Surprisingly, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, the Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, has declared a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings. He gave his reasons which you will find out in this post. This decision was enacted on March 5, 2025, after consultations with various Islamic clerics.
The reasons for this ban are obvious: to discourage excessive spending on weddings and to encourage a more traditional Islamic practices.
By taking this step, the Imam hopes to promote celebrations that are not only meaningful but also align with the values of the Islamic community.
Here are several practices which will no longer be allowed at Islamic wedding ceremonies:
Couples will not be allowed to engage in changing of multiple outfits during celebrations.
The practice of men dressing as the opposite sex is abolished.
Local music and dance events known as ‘jams’ is prohibited.
