Using State Funds for a ‘Wasteful’ National Cathedral Over Railways: Obiri Boahen Descends On Akufo-Addo

The past Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has raised serious concerns about the priorities of former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his administration.

Mr Boahen vehemently argues that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo misallocated state funds to the controversial National Cathedral project, while Ghana’s railway sector continues to struggle till date.

In an interview with Neat FM on March, 2025, Obiri Boahen called out the gargantuan investment in the cathedral, labeling it as a mismanagement of Ghana’s resources and affirming that the funds could have been more efficiently used to address pressing national issues.

The words of Nana Obiri Boahen are as follows: “How can you use state funds for a cathedral while our railway sector was in a poor state? The money he invested in the cathedral could have been used to revive the railway sector. There was no need for such a project,”.

Obiri Boahen went ahead to show his disappointments over criticisms aimed at him for talking against the National Cathedral project. He said: “I spoke against it, and they criticized me. But why would you use such funds on a wasteful project?” Here is an except of the interview:

Current State Of The National Cathedral

In March 2018, former president Nana Akufo-Addo, unveiled the design for the National Cathedral, 9-acre landscaped garden area next to Osu Cemetery. Nana Akufo-Addo asserted that: “The interdenominational national cathedral will help unify the Christian community and thereby help promote national unity and social cohesion,”

However, as at 2025, the alleged $400M state-funded national cathedral is under heavy criticism for matters relating to funding transparency, procurement irregularities, delays in construction, and questions about its long-term sustainability.
