German diplomat Holger Scherf was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1958. Since October 2020, he has served as the German Federal Republic’s ambassador to Paraguay.
Holger Scherf began his career as a banker after completing his high school education, working in this capacity from 1978 to 1979.
After that, he attended Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz to study political science, law, and history until 1988. Scherf entered the foreign service in 1988 after passing the second state test in law.
Scherf worked in the Foreign Office’s political department from 1989 to 1991 after finishing his attaché training. Subsequently, she took on overseas postings at the Consulate General in Barcelona (in charge of legal and consular matters, 1993–1996) and the Embassy in Belgrade (director of the economic department, 1991–1993).
In 1999, following a brief tenure in the Foreign Office’s cultural section, he was appointed permanent representative of the head of the Panama Embassy.
The embassy in Madrid was Scherf’s second mission. From 2001 to 2003, he served as the department’s chief of culture.
He held the position of permanent representative of the head of the Bucharest embassy in between two postings in the Foreign Office’s legal department (2003–2008 and 2011–2015).
Scherf led the Embassy of Washington’s Legal and Consular Affairs Department from 2015 until 2020. On October 14, 2020, Holger Scherf gave his credentials to Mario Abdo Benítez, President of the Republic of Paraguay, following his appointment as ambassador in the summer of 2020.
