Early Life
Growing up in Basildon, Essex, he was inspired by musicians such as David Bowie and found comfort in the punk and glam rock scenes of the 1970s. His desire to be a musician prompted him to start his first band, The Vermin, and later in 1980 he teamed up with Andrew Fletcher and Martin Gore to establish Depeche Mode.
