Mary Jo Andres Buscemi, known professionally as Jo Andres, was an American filmmaker, choreographer, and artist.
She was born in Wichita, Kansas, on May 21, 1954. Andres rose to prominence in the 1980s on the tumultuous downtown New York performance scene, where she showcased her film/dance/light performances at venues such as the Performing Garage, La Mama Experimental Theatre Club P.S. 122, St. Marks Danspace, and the Collective for Living Cinema.
Andres won critical praise and multiple honours as a director for her 1996 film “Black Kites.”
The film was shown at prestigious film festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, London, and the Human Rights Watch Film Festivals. It was also broadcast on PBS, enhancing Andres’ reputation as a creative director.
She directed music and art videos, as well as her own cinematic performance works, in addition to her film work.
Andres was also a member of the famed Wooster Group, where he worked as a dance consultant. Her expertise and originality in the realm of dance were highly respected and contributed to the Wooster Group’s success and fame.
