Gunther Philipp’s Biography
Gunther Philipp was born on 8 June 1918, in Vienna, Austria. He was an Austrian film actor, physician, and swimmer.
Philipp had a diverse five-decade career in which he featured in numerous films, produced screenplays, and even pursued a successful medical practice.
Philipp’s passion for performing began at a young age, and he had the opportunity to study acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar during WWII.
Philipp enrolled at the University of Vienna after finishing his education, where he majored in psychology and later medicine. He received his doctorate in medicine in 1943, earning the title of Dr. med. univ.
Philipp enjoyed swimming in addition to his academic studies. He excelled in the sport, setting multiple Austrian records, most notably the 100-meter breaststroke.
His talent earned him a spot on Austria’s Olympic squad in 1936, but he was not nominated due to political concerns. Philipp declined to join the National Socialist-dominated “First Vienna Amateur Sports Club,” and as a result, he was barred from competing in the Olympics.
Philipp founded a medical practice in Eberstalzell, Upper Austria, after WWII. He continued to balance his medical work and his acting interests. From 1949 until 2002, he acted in 147 films and television shows, mostly in comedic parts.
