Wolfgang von Trips, also known as “Taffy,” was the scion of a noble Rhineland family and grew up in a Romantic-moated castle near Horrem.
Von Trips had a passion for racing at a young age, but he also had responsibilities to his family’s agricultural and fruit-growing properties. Despite this, he pursued his genuine interest, training to become a qualified farmer while also concentrating on his racing career.
Von Trips debuted in Formula One World Championship Grand Prix events on September 2, 1956. He competed in 29 races during his career, winning two, obtaining one pole position, and finishing on the podium six times. He totaled 56 championship points.
Von Trips had diabetes, yet that didn’t stop him from succeeding in his sport. He always ate high-sugar snacks during races to keep his blood sugar stable.
Despite his accomplishments, tragedy struck von Trips on September 10, 1961, during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. His Ferrari clashed with Jim Clark’s Lotus, causing von Trips to lose control and fall into a crowd, killing him.
This accident remains the worst in Formula One history, and as a result, sharply banked turns were prohibited on future Formula One circuits.
