Wilhelmine Caroline Charlotte Aschenbrenner was a well-known German theatre actress, also going by the names Wilhelmine Aschenbrenner-Miedke, Wilhelmine Aschenbrenner-Miedtke, and Wilhelmine Vetter. On February 4, 1791, in Frankfurt am Main, she was born.
Wilhelmine was raised in a household steeped in the performing arts, so her love of the theatre was apparent from an early age. In 1810, her father, Franz Aschenbrenner, directed plays in Linz. Wilhelmine started her theatrical career under his influence and direction.
Wilhelmine had already begun acting in child roles in Stuttgart when she was very young. Her ability and commitment soon attracted the attention of many, and she started landing important parts in German theatres.
She married the actor, director, and playwright Carl Miedke in 1810. But they only remained married until 1820, when they decided to call it quits.
Wilhelmine performed at esteemed theatres like the Leipzig Theatre and the Hoftheater Stuttgart during her career. She also made cameos in towns like Bremen, Hamburg, and Darmstadt, where she wowed audiences with her performances and demonstrated her flexibility.
Wilhelmine began performing professionally at the Hoftheater Darmstadt in 1827, where she played tragic mothers and other supporting roles. She married the singer Franz Xaver Vetter in 1828, and the two of them moved back to Stuttgart in 1832.
In addition to her performances, Wilhelmine’s skill and contributions to the theatre were acknowledged in an 1834 portrait by renowned painter Otto Stotz. Wilhelmine was a superb theatre actor, and her legacy endures despite the paucity of knowledge about her life after this.
