Wilhelm Dieterle could be described as a German-born actor and film director. He was known to have been born on July 15, 1893, but unfortunately died on December 9, 1972. He is said to have migrated to the United States of America in 1930.
It must be noted that he served as a director in Hollywood and subsequently became a citizen of the United States of America in 1937.
Wilhelm Dieterle was the youngest child among nine children of his parents. His parents were Jacob and Berte Dieterle. Jacob was a factory worker.
As a carpenter and scrap dealer, Wilhelm Dieterle worked just to make ends meet as he lived in poverty. When Wilhelm Dieterle turned 16, he became a member of a traveling theater company. While with the theater company, he served as handyman, scene shifter as well as an apprentice actor.
He was hired as an actor by Max Reinhardt in 1919 in Berlin. He was involved in the productions of Max til 1924. In a bid to become popular and make more money, Wilhelm Dieterle started making appearances in German films beginning from 1921.
Wilhelm Dieterle got married in 1921 to Charlotte Hagenbruch. It needs to be mentioned that Charlotte Hagenbruch was an actress and a screenwriter. He formed his own theater company in Berlin but it could not stand the test of time.
Later in 1927, Wilhelm Dieterle teamed up with his wife, Charlotte to set up Charhha-Film, a production company.
Some of the films to the credit of Wilhelm Dieterle include The Masked Ones (1920), The Vulture Wally (1921), The Conspiracy in Genoa (1921), Marie Antoinette, the Love of a King (1922), Lucrezia Borgia (1922), Miss Julie (1922), Women’s Sacrifice (1922), La Boheme (1923) and Man by the Wayside (1923).
Others are The Pagoda (1923), The Second Shot (1923) and The Green Manuela (1923).
