English singer-songwriter and musician Peter Brian Gabriel was born on February 13, 1950, and his influence on the music industry is far-reaching and unconstrained. Gabriel’s career has been distinguished by creativity, activism, and a dedication to pushing the frontiers of musical expression. He first gained notoriety as the original lead vocalist of the progressive rock group Genesis.

Early Life

Genesis was the first band Gabriel worked within the music business, and he was a major contributor to the progressive rock sound the band created. The band’s popularity was aided by his unique voice and dramatic stage presence. Gabriel was recognized as a leader with a distinct and innovative approach to music when Genesis emerged as a major player in the progressive rock genre.

Gabriel began a solo career that would further establish his reputation as a musical genius after splitting from Genesis in 1975. “Solsbury Hill,” his first solo hit, signaled the start of a prosperous solo career. The year 1986 saw the release of “So,” his fifth studio album, which marked a sea change. With three platinum sales in the UK and five platinum sales in the US, “So” is his best-selling record. “Sledgehammer,” the album’s lead single, brought Gabriel not only financial success but also nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, making it, according to a 2011 assessment, MTV’s most-played music video ever.

Gabriel has been a committed supporter of global music in addition to his musical pursuits. He was a co-founder of the World of Music, Arts, and Dance (WOMAD) festival in 1982, which offered a venue for a variety of international musical expressions. Gabriel has persisted in promoting and creating world music through his Real World Records label, adding to the awareness of many cultural sounds across the world.

Peter Gabriel’s influence on the music business goes beyond his artistic creations. By co-founding OD2, one of the first online music download sites, he significantly contributed to the development of digital music distribution techniques. Through his innovative methods, Gabriel helped to change the music industry and usher in the digital age.

His anti-apartheid record “Biko” was published in 1980, and he has been actively involved in several human rights projects. Gabriel’s campaigning has endured, from his involvement in benefit concerts—such as Amnesty International’s Human Rights Now! tour—to his co-founding of the Witness human rights group in 1992. Together with Richard Branson, he created The Elders, a group that Nelson Mandela founded in 2007 to tackle world issues.

Among his many accolades are the Polar Music Prize, thirteen MTV Video Music Awards, six Grammy Awards, and three Brit Awards. His continued impact in the music industry is evidenced by his admittance into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a solo artist and in 2010 as a member of Genesis.
