She began working as a dancing coach at Kansas State Teachers College in 1923. Hill spent three years teaching there before going to New York City in 1926.
Martha Hill, a well-known dancer, was employed as an assistant professor of dance at the University of Oregon in 1927. She studied with Martha Graham and eventually joined the Martha Graham Dance Company. She then became the Director of Dance at New York University and the Chair of the Dance Department at Bennington College.
Hill established the “Bennington School of the Dance” and later founded a School of the Dance at Connecticut College. In 1951, she became The Juilliard School’s first Director of Dance, overseeing both ballet and modern dance training.
