Klaus-Dieter Henkler Biography
Klaus-Dieter Henkler, born on January 19, 1944, in Seebenau, is a multi-talented German artist known for his singing, acting, and composing skills. He is also a renowned voice actor and songwriter.
Henkler is well known for his work with Monika Hauff in the Berlin singing and presenting duo Hauff and Henkler.
Henkler’s musical career began when he was four years old when his parents gave him an accordion. He eventually learned to play the guitar and piano. He polished his skills even further by studying composition and singing at the Halle Conservatory.
Henkler formed the vocal duo Hauff and Henkler with Monika Hauff in 1968. They recorded the song “Thousand Questions” by Jürgen Heider and Harro Korth for the Berliner Rundfunk before the duo’s official inception.
Their repertoire included hits, mood songs, folklore, and country music, among others.
They released almost 300 titles in 22 languages, with their GDR hit “Das war ein Meisterschuss” being the most well-known. To date, their combined record sales have surpassed ten million copies.
From 1968 to 1976, Henkler actively competed in various popular song competitions both in Germany and abroad, frequently placing first.
He and Monika Hauff won the Grand Prix de Paris chanson competition in 1975 with the song “When I saw you again today” by Reinhard Lakomy and Fred Gertz. He also took part in the German Heritage Festival in New Jersey in 1990.
Henkler, in addition to his successful music career, also dabbled in acting. In 1971, he made his film debut opposite Evelyn Opoczynski, Renate Geißler, and Jaecki Schwarz in the comedy “Du und ich und Klein-Paris.”
Furthermore, he was heavily active in several DFF shows, such as moderating “Ein Kessel Buntes” and co-moderating “Zwischen Frühstück und Gänsebraten.” From 1968 to 1972, his unique television formats included the music carousel and “Zwei Musiker ziehen blank” from 1977 to 1979.
He also appeared on popular German television shows like “Zum Blauen Bock,” “Musikladen,” “Kein schöner Land,” and “ZDF-Hitparade.”
Henkler’s musical talent extended to film soundtrack composition as well. Ulrich Thein’s DEFA film “Dach überm Kopf” used his music on the soundtrack.
Notably, “Katarina,” one of his titles, was dedicated to the great figure skater Katarina Witt and debuted on “Zwischen Frühstück und Gänsebraten.”
In 1994, Henkler and Monika Hauff were awarded the Hermann Löns Medal for their achievements in the music industry. In 2013 and 2014, they marked their 45th stage anniversary as a duo with live performances and television broadcasts.
