Gino Santercole’s Biography

Gino Santercole, born Luigi Santercole, was an Italian singer-songwriter, composer, actor, and guitarist. He was born in Milan on November 23, 1940, and passed away on June 8, 2018, in Rome.

Santercole was the son of Rosa Celentano, the sister of Adriano Celentano, making Adriano his biological uncle despite being only two years his senior. He grew up on the famed via Gluck. He was also the cousin of Alessandra Celentano, the daughter of Alessandro Celentano, Adriano and Rosa’s brother.

After losing his father at a young age, Santercole spent some years in boarding school and had to labour as a young lad, including as a watchmaker like Celentano. He was, however, a fan of rock and roll and taught himself to play the guitar in his spare time.

When his uncle Adriano Celentano established the Rock Boys, he made his musical debut. Santercole replaced Ico Cerutti shortly after.

I Ribelli, a group that accompanied Celentano and other artists such as Clem Sacco and Ricky Gianco, was developed by the Rock Boys. Santercole was the band’s guitarist for many years.

He found fame as a solo vocalist with the release of “Stella d’Argento” in December 1964, which got excellent reviews in the months that followed. He came to prominence even more with his song “Questo Vecchio Crazy World,” a version of “Eve of Destruction.”

In 1966, he sang “Il Ragazzo della Via Gluck” as part of the Trio del Clan at the Sanremo Festival with his uncle.

Santercole’s abilities extended beyond singing and guitar playing. He wrote several well-known Italian songs, including “Una carezza in un pugno,” which Celentano sang on his television shows and was later recorded by Fiorello.

He also composed soundtracks for Celentano’s films and contributed to them. In both primary and subsidiary roles, he collaborated with notable filmmakers such as Pietro Germi, Dino Risi, and Mario Monicelli.

The Celentano Clan’s Return to Television and Reconciliation: In 1999, Santercole teamed with Pio Trebbi on the album “L’ultimo del Clan” for the Celentano Clan.

After some previous clashes, their collaboration led to a reunion between Santercole and Celentano. They appeared together on an episode of Celentano’s television show “Frankly I don’t care.”

Santercole maintained his music career throughout the 2000s and 2010s, releasing albums such as “Nobody is Alone” in 2010 and “I Want to Be Me” in 2014. He recorded a new album of unpublished music in 2017 and 2018, which was released in April 2018 under the title “Non sono Celentano! I want to be me.”

Gino Santercole died of a heart attack at the age of 77 in his Rome residence on June 8, 2018. His funeral was held in Rome at the adjacent church of Santa Rosa da Viterbo.
