Antonio Polito’s Biography
Antonio Polito born on 11 May 1956 is an Italian journalist and politician. Since 2011, he has been a columnist for Corriere della Sera, one of Italy’s leading newspapers.
Polito’s education began with a traditional high school diploma. He became involved in politics at a young age, joining the Italian Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist). However, he was quickly dismissed from the party due to his participation in bourgeois pursuits such as tennis. He joined the Italian Communist Party and the Italian Communist Youth Federation (FGCI), undeterred.
Polito began his journalistic career in 1975 at the Neapolitan office of l’Unità, a left-wing weekly. He worked there till 1982, identifying himself with the political trend of meliorism.
He later worked as a manager for the Emilia-Romagna regional insert before being called to the newspaper’s headquarters in Rome.
Polito joined Repubblica, another renowned Italian newspaper, in 1988. He served as assistant director, first for Eugenio Scalfari and then for Ezio Mauro. He was also in charge of the newspaper’s online edition and worked as a correspondent in London. Polito quit Repubblica in 2002 to start and direct Il Riformista, a “orange” moderate left-wing journal.
Polito first entered politics in 2006, when he ran for the Senate of the Republic on the Ulivo lists, a collaboration of the Democrats of the Left and La Margherita.
He was elected senator from the Campania seat, and he served as secretary of the 3rd Foreign Affairs and Emigration Commission during the 15th legislature.
Polito was elected as the city secretary of La Margherita in Naples in 2007, in addition to his political career. Despite repeated pleas from the Democratic Party, he declined to run for Senate again in 2008 and returned to his role as the director of Il Riformista. Due to a change in ownership, he resigned from the newspaper in December 2010, and has been a columnist for Corriere della Sera since January 2011. From 2014 to 2015, he was the director of Corriere del Mezzogiorno, and from 2015 to 2018, he was the deputy director of Corriere della Sera.
Antonio Polito is a member of several worldwide research institutes and organisations, including the “Policy Network,” “Les Progressistes,” and the Aspen Institute.
He served as vice president of the Italy USA Foundation from 2006 until 2009.
Polito is married to Patrizia Ravaioli, the former general director of the Italian Red Cross. Sofia and Adriano are the couple’s twin children.
Polito has garnered numerous prizes and accolades for his contributions to journalism and writing over his career.
He won the Guido Carli Award in 2015, and the Cesare Pavese Award in 2018 for his article “Let’s Take Our Children Back.” In 2019, he was awarded the Rome Prize for Nonfiction.
