Antonio Ingroia’s Biography

Antonio Ingroia, born on March 31, 1959, in Palermo, is an Italian lawyer, journalist, former magistrate, and politician.

He earned a law degree from the University of Palermo with a grade of 110 cum laude. His criminal law thesis on mafia associations won the Sicilian Gramsci Institute’s special prize for the best degree thesis on the mafia in 1986.

Ingroia began his professional training in the Palermo court under the supervision of renowned magistrate Giovanni Falcone after winning the judicial competition in 1987.

In 1989, he was named deputy prosecutor in Marsala, where he worked closely with the prosecutor at the time, Paolo Borsellino.

In Marsala, he handled various sensitive criminal processes, particularly those involving the mafia, and supported Borsellino in obtaining statements from major justice collaborators, becoming one of the first in the Trapani region to do so.

In 1992, Ingroia returned to Palermo as deputy prosecutor, working alongside Paolo Borsellino. In April of that year, he was appointed to the anti-mafia district prosecutor’s office (DDA) of Palermo.

Ingroia worked as a magistrate in the Palermo prosecutor’s office until 2012, managing difficult criminal cases involving organised crime. Murder, extortion, kidnapping, mafia-like affiliations, drug trafficking, and money laundering were among his cases.

He also took part in international letters rogatory and presided over proceedings including the death of journalist Mauro Rostagno, external mafia complicity, and state-mafia negotiations.

In July 2012, the United Nations named Ingroia as the Head of the Investigations Department of the CICIG, a transnational investigating body targeting organised crime in Central America, notably in Guatemala.

Following his work at the CICIG, Ingroia entered the political sphere, running as the Civil Revolution list’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2013 Italian elections.

Following the elections, Ingroia worked as a deputy prosecutor in the Aosta Public Prosecutor’s Office from April to June 2013. However, he was removed from the bench soon after.

In July 2013, he was appointed commissioner of Sicilia e-Servizi, the business in charge of managing the Sicilian Region’s IT systems, by the president of the Sicilian Region, Rosario Crocetta.

He was appointed sole director of the company in April 2014. Ingroia was nominated by President Rosario Crocetta as the extraordinary commissioner of the province of Trapani from February to December 2014.

In addition to his lengthy professional experience, Ingroia is a prolific author with multiple books to his credit and a columnist for il Fatto Quotidiano.
