Alexei Anatolievich Navalny was born on June 4, 1976, and is a well-known opposition politician, attorney, and campaigner against corruption in Russia. His steadfast dedication to justice has made him a key figure in the country’s anti-corruption campaign. He is married with two children.
Education and Career
In 1998, Navalny enrolled in law school after graduating from Moscow’s People’s Friendship University of Russia. He took advantage of the chance to stay in Moscow and began his legal career in addition to pursuing his academic objectives. Navalny received his economics degree with honors from the Russian Federation’s government-run Financial University in 2001.
Navalny’s law training laid the foundation for his advocacy. Organizing anti-government protests and campaigning for politics, he first earned notoriety by pushing for changes to fight corruption in Russia, specifically focusing on President Vladimir Putin and his administration. Through his efforts, the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) and the Russia of the Future party were established.
As a representative of the Russian Opposition Coordination Council, Navalny intensified his criticism of United Russia, the ruling party, infamously calling it a “party of crooks and thieves” in a radio appearance that went viral in Russia. Under his leadership, the FBK exposed corruption by focusing investigations on senior officials and generating discussion and awareness.
Navalny’s activity encountered both legal and political roadblocks. In July 2013, Navalny was given a suspended sentence for embezzlement; yet, he persisted and entered the Moscow mayoral race, earning a noteworthy 27% of the vote. But after more legal actions in December 2014, he was given another suspended term, which barred him from standing for office in the future.
Later, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that Navalny’s criminal prosecutions violated his right to a fair trial since they were politically motivated. His bid to become president in the 2018 election was derailed in 2016 when he was disqualified by Russia’s Central Election Commission because of a previous criminal conviction. Because of Navalny’s tenacity, Smart Voting a calculated tactic meant to combine opposition votes was introduced.
Navalny was exposed to a potentially fatal dose of Novichok nerve toxin in August 2020, posing a serious risk to his life. Following his hospitalization and subsequent medical evacuation to Berlin, he made a full recovery and blamed Putin for masterminding the attack. After returning to Russia in January 2021, Navalny was placed under immediate arrest on charges of parole restrictions.
On allegations of extremism, Navalny was sentenced to an extra 19 years in jail in August 2023. His release date was scheduled for December 2038. His analysis of the sentence’s duration, comparing it to the lifetime of the political system or himself, brought attention to the continuous fight against repressive policies.
Navalny vanished from his jail in December 2023, and his team hasn’t heard from him since December 5. Concerns have been raised over his safety and well-being because the circumstances surrounding his abduction coincide with the start of the Russian presidential election season in 2024.
