Sanna Marin’s Biography

Marin, who was born on November 16, 1985, in Helsinki, had a difficult childhood because her parents divorced when she was young and her father struggled with alcoholism.

Her mother and her mother’s female partner reared her, prompting her to refer to her family as a “rainbow family.”

Marin graduated from Pirkkala High School in 2004 at the age of 19. She worked as a bakery worker and cashier while attending the University of Tampere.

She received her bachelor’s degree in administrative science in 2012 and her master’s degree in 2017. She became interested in politics while at university, joining the Social Democratic Youth in 2006.

Marin’s political career began when she joined the Social Democratic Youth at the age of 20. From 2010 to 2012, she was its vice president. She ran for Tampere City Council in 2008 but was defeated.

However, she ran again in 2012 and was elected, quickly becoming the chairwoman of the City Council. Marin also garnered notoriety for chairing acrimonious meetings that were broadcast on YouTube.

Marin was elected to the Finnish Parliament in 2015 as a member of the Pirkanmaa electoral district. She served in parliament from 2015 until 2023, and she was re-elected in April 2023.

However, in September 2023, she resigned from her seat in the Finnish parliament to serve as a strategic advisor at the Tony Blair Institute.

Marin’s illustrious political career reached new heights in December 2019, when the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) nominated her to succeed Antti Rinne as Prime Minister of Finland.

At the age of 34, she became Finland’s youngest prime minister and the country’s third female head of government.

Marin, as Prime Minister, spearheaded the reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic by declaring a state of emergency. She also criticised Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and backed Ukraine in its struggle.

Finland requested NATO membership under her leadership in May 2022 and was accepted in April 2023.

Marin’s presidency, however, was not without controversy. She was chastised for a photo shoot in October 2020 and for leaking private party tapes.

Her party, the SDP, lost its majority in the 2023 parliamentary election, and Marin was succeeded as prime minister by Petteri Orpo of the National Coalition Party.

Marin has been recognised for her strong position on a variety of problems as well as her dedication to progressive ideals. She has been an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and a proponent of gender equality in politics.

Marin’s leadership and accomplishments have earned her acclaim both in Finland and globally.

Outside of politics, Marin is a vegetarian with a daughter from her previous relationship with Markus Rรคikkรถnen. She will marry Rรคikkรถnen in August 2020 at the Prime Minister’s official house, Kesรคranta.

However, after 19 years together, the pair filed for divorce in May 2023.

Marin has taken up a post as a strategic advisor at the Tony Blair Institute upon her retirement from Finnish politics, demonstrating her sustained commitment to creating political leadership and reform programmes.
