Ronald Wayne Van Zant, born on January 15, 1948, and passed away on October 20, 1977, was a highly influential American singer and the original lead vocalist of the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Parents Lacy Austin and Marion Virginia Van Zant reared Van Zant in Jacksonville, Florida, where he was born and raised. Before landing on Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band went through a number of name modifications as a lighthearted homage to Leonard Skinner, their high school gym teacher.

The band members decided to pay homage to Skinner in this fashion because of his stringent adherence of a no-long-hair policy.

With the publication of their debut album, “(Pronounced ‘Lh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd),” in 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd made a breakthrough.

The release of the album, which launched their ascent to stardom in the music business and included singles like “Free Bird,” “Simple Man,” and “Tuesday’s Gone,” was significant.

Their biggest successful track, “Second Helping,” from the band’s subsequent album, which was released in 1974 and contained “Sweet Home Alabama,” which became an iconic anthem.

Sadly, a plane disaster near Gillsburg, Mississippi, on October 20, 1977, claimed the life of Van Zant. Several band members, including Van Zant, as well as the crew and the pilots perished in the disaster.
