Peter Alexander Makkay, known as Peter Maffay, is a Romanian-born German musician, singer, and composer.

Peter Maffay’s Biography

Peter Maffay was born in Braşov, Romania, on August 30, 1949. When he was just 14 years old, in 1963, his family moved to West Germany.

He founded The Dukes, his debut band, that same year. Maffay started playing his music in clubs after finishing school and working for an art manufacturer.

With the release of his debut single, “Du” (“You”), in 1970, Maffay’s career took off. The song gave Maffay immediate notoriety and became a big hit in Germany.

Maffay shot to fame in Germany when his album Steppenwolf was released in 1979. The album was one of the best-selling records at the time, having sold 1.6 million copies.

His album Revanche, which sold more than 2.1 million copies in 1980, shattered his previous record.

Apart from his individual pursuits, Maffay collaborated with German singer-songwriter Johnny Tame to establish the prosperous country music group Tame & Maffay in 1976. They put out two albums together and kept up a tight working relationship till 1985.

Another well-known creation by Maffay is a collection of fairy tales about Tabaluga, a small green dragon. These stories were eventually made into a musical and were spread across five albums.

Maffay performed with musicians including Alexis, Nino de Angelo, Rufus Beck, and Carl Carlton while on tour in Germany with Tabaluga & Lilli. He broadcast a live TV show, a live DVD, and a live album from the tour.

Maffay recorded the album “Begegnungen” (“Encounters”) in 1998 in collaboration with international musicians and singers, including Israeli musicians and Aboriginal singers.

Two of his biggest hits, “Freiheit die ich meine” (“The Freedom I Mean”) and “Siehst du die Sonne” (“Do You See the Sun”), were written by German musician Julia Neigel, with whom he frequently collaborates.

In addition to his work in music, Maffay has dabbled in acting, appearing in films including The Polar Bear (1998), Captive in Yemen (1999), and Lethal Obsession (1987).

For his contributions to music and social activity, he has won various honours and recognitions.

Maffay is a peace activist who has entertained German soldiers in Afghanistan with performances organised by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Additionally, he gives to charities that support mistreated and traumatised kids.

Maffay has sold more than 40 million records, making him one of the greatest performers in Germany.

All thirteen of his tours since 1980 have been among Germany’s most popular musical events. He was a judge on the reality series The Voice of Germany in 2022.

Maffay still works hard at his music career and resides on a farm in Mallorca, Spain, with his family.

With albums ranging from his early compositions like “Für das Mädchen, das ich liebe” (1970) to his most recent release “Tabaluga – Die Welt ist wunderbar!” (2022), Peter Maffay has a vast career.

In Germany, his albums have routinely topped the charts, and some of them have been certified platinum or multi-platinum. Fans all around the world are still drawn to Maffay’s music, and he is still well-known in the German music scene.
