Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark and Count of Monpezat is the heir apparent to the Danish throne.

He is the oldest son of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik, born on May 26, 1968. Crown Prince Frederik was born in Copenhagen via emergency C-section at Rigshospitalet, the Copenhagen University Hospital.

On June 24, 1968, Frederik was christened at Holmen Church in Copenhagen. He was named Frederik after his maternal grandfather, King Frederick IX, in keeping with the Danish royal tradition of naming the heir apparent either Frederick or Christian. His middle names honour his father, Prince Henrik, and his maternal great-grandfather, Christian X.

When his mother, Queen Margrethe II, ascended to the Danish throne on January 14, 1972, Crown Prince Frederik became the successor to the Danish monarchy. Prince Joachim of Denmark is his younger brother.

Frederik attended Krebs’ Skole for elementary school and Amalienborg Palace for private school before returning to Krebs’ Skole for third form. He attended the École des Roches, a residential school in Normandy, France, from 1982 to 1983.

He graduated from Regrd Gymnasium in 1986.

After finishing high school, Frederik enrolled in a political science course at Aarhus University. From 1992 to 1993, he attended Harvard University and was a member of the Phoenix—SK Club.

In 1994, he also served for three months with the Danish UN mission in New York. In 1995, he received his MSc in political science from Aarhus University, making him the first prince to do so.

Frederik’s military career has included intensive study and training in all three branches of Denmark’s defence forces. He finished his frogman training with the naval elite special operations unit, Frmandskorpset.

He has held numerous grades and roles in the Danish Army, Navy, and Air Force reserve forces. He has held staff officer and senior lecturer positions at the Royal Danish Defence College.

Frederik married Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, an Australian marketing expert, in 2003. Christian, Isabella, and twins Vincent and Josephine are their four children.

Frederik is passionate about scientific research, climate change, and environmental sustainability. He has taken part in climate-related trips and events, and he has advocated for sustainable Danish energy.

He has published and contributed to climate and nature publications. He actively engages in sports and supports scientific research projects, supporting an active lifestyle.

He enjoys running and has finished marathons in Copenhagen, New York, and Paris, as well as the KMD Ironman Copenhagen. Frederik is an avid sailor who has competed in numerous sailing competitions.
