He is the oldest son of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik, born on May 26, 1968. Crown Prince Frederik was born in Copenhagen via emergency C-section at Rigshospitalet, the Copenhagen University Hospital.

On June 24, 1968, Frederik was christened at Holmen Church in Copenhagen. He was named Frederik after his maternal grandfather, King Frederick IX, in keeping with the Danish royal tradition of naming the heir apparent either Frederick or Christian. His middle names honour his father, Prince Henrik, and his maternal great-grandfather, Christian X.

When his mother, Queen Margrethe II, ascended to the Danish throne on January 14, 1972, Crown Prince Frederik became the successor to the Danish monarchy. Prince Joachim of Denmark is his younger brother.

Frederik attended Krebs’ Skole for elementary school and Amalienborg Palace for private school before returning to Krebs’ Skole for third form. He attended the École des Roches, a residential school in Normandy, France, from 1982 to 1983.

Frederik married Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, an Australian marketing expert, in 2003. Christian, Isabella, and twins Vincent and Josephine are their four children.
