Don Roberto Repole’s Biography
Roberto Repole is an Italian Catholic Archbishop and theologian, born on January 29, 1967, in Turin.
He is well-known for his services to the Church and his profound grasp of theology. Pope Francis nominated him metropolitan archbishop of Turin and bishop of Susa on February 19, 2022.
Roberto Repole was born to Concetta Mancuso, originally from Corleone, and Vito Repole, a former agricultural and trade counsellor at Druento’s municipal council in the 1980s.
He grew up in Givoletto’s Forvilla district and attended elementary and middle school in Druento.
Later, he completed his high school studies at the minor seminary and graduated from Valsalice Salesian High School in 1986 with a classical high school diploma.
His interest in theology led him to further his studies in philosophy and theology at Turin’s archepiscopal seminary. In 1992, he received his baccalaureate in theology from the parallel division of the Theological Faculty of Turin.
He completed his studies in systematic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome to broaden his expertise. In 1998, he earned a licentiate, and in 2001, he earned a doctorate.
to June 13, 1992, Cardinal Giovanni Saldarini conferred presbyteral ordination to Roberto Repole, making him an archdiocese of Turin priest.
From 1992 to 1996, he was a parish vicar as well as a professor of systematic theology at the parallel Turin branch of the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy and the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences of the same city.
He has held various prominent roles within the Church throughout his career. In 2010, he was appointed canon of the royal church of San Lorenzo in Turin, and from 2011 to 2019, he was president of the Italian Theological Association.
He has also served as dean of the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy’s Turin department, as a pastoral collaborator of the parish of Santa Maria della Stella in Druento, and as a member of different ecclesiastical commissions and councils.
Pope Francis named Roberto Repole as the 95th metropolitan archbishop of Turin and bishop of Susa in 2022. This appointment is important because he is the first native Turinite to be appointed archbishop since 1897.
On May 7, 2022, he was ordained as an archbishop in the graveyard of Turin’s cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, and on June 29, he received the pallium from Pope Francis.
Roberto Repole has made substantial contributions to theology during his career. He edited “The Theology of Pope Francis,” a series that featured theologians’ insights to honour the fifth anniversary of Pope Francis’ election.
His work has been praised, but it has also been criticised for incorporating theologians who have previously questioned Pope Benedict XVI’s teaching authority.
