Chiara Colosimo’s Biography
Chiara Colosimo, born on June 2, 1986, in Rome, Italy, is an Italian politician and a member of the Chamber of Brothers of Italy since October 13, 2022.
She is now the president of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, a position she assumed on May 23, 2023.
Colosimo grew up in the Rome neighbourhood of Balduina and completed her classical high school education at the Convitto Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele II. She succeeded academically, graduating with a grade point average of 86.
Following her high school education, she enrolled in a political science degree programme at LUISS Guido Carli in Rome, however she did not complete her studies.
Her political career began in high school, when she joined Azione Studentesca, the National Alliance’s student organisation, and visited the Garbatella headquarters. Fabio Rampelli, the founder of Rome’s Gabbiani community, became her political mentor and reference.
In 2009, she was named regional president of Giovane Italia nel Lazio, a Popolo della Libertà youth organisation.
Colosimo’s political career continued with her election as a regional councillor for the For Lazio list in the 2010 Lazio regional elections, when she supported centre-right presidential candidate Renata Polverini.
During this time, she faced backlash for comments she made in the former MSI headquarters in Garbatella, where she displayed a poster of the Romanian Iron Guard’s founder, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu.
She later underlined, however, that she clearly denounced Nazism and fascism.
Colosimo joined the party led by Giorgia Meloni when Fratelli d’Italia separated from the Popolo della Libertà in 2012.
She soon progressed through the ranks to become the party’s national head. She ran for the Chamber of Deputies under the Brothers of Italy list in the 2013 parliamentary elections but was not elected.
She also did not win re-election as a regional councillor in Lazio’s current regional elections that year.
Undaunted, Colosimo ran again in the 2018 Lazio regional elections, this time in support of Stefano Parisi. She was re-elected as a regional councillor after garnering 10,895 votes in the Rome constituency. As a result, she was elected president of her council group.
Colosimo ran for the Chamber of Deputies in the Lazio 2 – 03 (Latina) single-member district in the 2022 elections, supporting the centre-right coalition Fratelli d’Italia.
She won the election with 54.51% of the vote, defeating the centre-left candidate Tommaso Malandruccolo (19.58%) and the 5 Star Movement candidate Gianluca Bono (15.64%).
Colosimo was a member of the 12th Social Affairs Commission and the secretary of the Bureau of the Chamber in the 19th Legislature. Her most remarkable achievement was being chosen president of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission on May 23, 2023.
Her candidature, however, was received with controversy because of her ties to Luigi Ciavardini, a former neo-fascist NAR terrorist convicted in the Bologna massacre.
Despite the criticism, Colosimo justified her contact with Ciavardini, claiming that she had interacted with him as the president of an organisation committed to the rehabilitation of ex-offenders.
