Barbara Wussow’s Biography
Barbara Wussow is an Austrian actress and author, born on March 28th, 1961, in Munich.
Her parents, former castle actor couple Klausjürgen Wussow and Ida Krottendorf, came from an acting family with deep roots. Alexander Wussow, her brother, is also an actor.
Wussow grew up in Munich, where she began attending ballet classes at the age of four. Her family went to Vienna when she was six years old because her father was hired by the Vienna Burgtheater after leaving his ancestral home at the Residenztheater in Munich.
In Vienna, she attended the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus’ Catholic elementary school, “Maria Regina” in Vienna-Döbling. She continued her studies at the same institution after finishing elementary school and graduated in 1979.
Wussow continued her education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where she studied stage design and costume design under the direction of Lois Egg.
She finished her studies in 1983, earning the academic title Magistra Artium. She also worked as an assistant to set designer Günther Schneider-Siemssen while in school.
Wussow initially contemplated a career in stage design but finally chose to follow in her parent’s footsteps and become an actress. She studied acting privately with renowned actor Susi Nicoletti before enrolling at the Vienna Krauss Drama School, where she passed the formal stage maturity exam.
Wussow made her stage debut in 1984, with actor Helmut Qualtinger, at Vienna’s Theatre in der Josefstadt, in the premiere of the theatre version of “Rosenkavalier.” This was the start of many years of acting and many parts at this distinguished theatre.
Wussow’s break into television came while she was studying at the Theatre in der Josefstadt, where she had the opportunity to appear on the small screen alongside her father.
In the popular ZDF television series “The Black Forest Clinic,” she played the learning sister Elke between 1985 and 1989. This role assisted her in making a reputation for herself in the profession.
She also appeared in numerous television shows, including “Hecht & Haie” and “Schlosshotel Orth,” in which she co-starred with her husband, Albert Fortell.
Wussow has appeared in several theatre, cinema, and television productions during her career. She has appeared in plays such as “Everyman” and at the Karl May Games in Bad Segeberg.
Since Easter 2018, she has played Hanna Liebhold, the hotel director, in the ZDF series “The Dream Ship.”
Wussow is interested in philanthropic efforts in addition to her profession as an actress. SOS Children’s Village in Kszeg, the German Childhood Cancer Aftercare Foundation, and Doctors Without Borders are among the organisations she supports.
She is an ambassador for Artists Helping Artists and the campaign Hilfswerk Austria (Alfa) with her brother.
Wussow is married to actor Albert Fortell since 1990, and the couple has two children. In April 2009, she and her brother Alexander co-wrote “Klausjürgen Wussow: His Life with Ida Krottendorff,” a book about their renowned father.
