Antonio DeMarco’s Biography
Antonio DeMarco, born Antonio de Marco Soto on January 7, 1986, is a professional boxer from Mexico.
In the boxing world, he is better known as Antonio “Tony” DeMarco. DeMarco rose to prominence while holding the WBC lightweight title from 2011 to 2012, and he has since competed for the WBA (Regular) super lightweight title in 2014.
He is also Humberto Soto’s cousin, a previous world champion.
DeMarco began his professional boxing career in the lightweight class. He won an interim belt following a dominant performance against José Alfaro in which he won every round before halting Alfaro in the tenth with three knockdowns.
DeMarco’s unbeaten record now stands at 15-0-1, with 10 knockouts. However, he was defeated by Edwin Valero, the full WBC lightweight champion.
Despite a brave attempt, DeMarco was stopped in the ninth round by Valero. DeMarco’s trainer called a halt to the fight, recognising Valero’s supremacy. When the fight ended, Valero was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards.
DeMarco rebounded with a second-round TKO victory over Daniel Attah and a unanimous decision victory over Reyes Sanchez, where he earned the WBC Silver Lightweight title.
DeMarco became a world champion on October 15, 2011, when he stopped former two-division champion Jorge Linares in the 11th round to earn the vacant WBC Lightweight title.
On September 8, 2012, he made his first championship defence against John Molina Jr., scoring a spectacular first-round knockout 44 seconds into the bout.
On November 22, 2014, DeMarco moved up to the light welterweight category and fought Jesse Vargas for the WBA (Regular) super lightweight belt. However, he was defeated by a unanimous decision in his pursuit of a third world title.
DeMarco has compiled an excellent professional boxing record of 33 victories (24 by knockout), 9 losses, and 1 draw. Among his opponents have been Adrien Broner, Rances Barthelemy, Omar Figueroa Jr., and Jamal James.
