Alexej Nawalny’s Biography
Alexei Anatolievich Navalny, born on June 4, 1976, has dedicated his life to lobbying for political reforms and battling corruption in Russia. Navalny is most known for scathing criticism of President Vladimir Putin and his government.
Navalny has been instrumental in organising anti-government protests and running for office to fight corruption. He served on the Russian Opposition Coordination Council and is the current leader of the Russia of the Future party and the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK).
Navalny and the FBK have conducted investigations into alleged corruption by Russian officials and their allies.
Navalny has used social media tools to reach millions during his career. He and his crew, who have over six million YouTube subscribers, have routinely uploaded material exposing corruption in Russia and supporting his campaigns.
Amnesty International has recognised Navalny’s activities and has designated him as a prisoner of conscience. He was also given the Sakharov Prize for his commitment to human rights.
Navalny’s activism has not been without repercussions. He received a suspended sentence for embezzlement in 2013, but was nevertheless permitted to run in the Moscow mayoral election, finishing second with 27% of the vote.
He received another suspended sentence for embezzlement in 2014, which many say was politically motivated to keep him from voting in future elections.
Navalny’s cases were later found to breach his right to a fair trial by the European Court of Human Rights, but his penalties were never reversed.
Navalny was hospitalised in critical condition in 2020 after being poisoned with a Novichok nerve toxin. He blamed Putin for his poisoning, and an inquiry revealed that agents from the Federal Security Service were involved.
Despite the risks, Navalny returned to Russia in 2021 and was promptly jailed on parole violation charges. His arrest, as well as the release of the documentary “Putin’s Palace,” which accused Putin of corruption, triggered nationwide protests.
Navalny’s suspended sentence was later replaced with a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence. His organisations, notably the FBK, were labelled as extreme and were disbanded. He was sentenced to another nine years in jail in 2022 on fresh allegations of embezzlement and contempt of court.
His appeal was denied, and he was sentenced to an extra 19 years in jail for extremism in 2023.
Navalny’s whereabouts are now unknown after he went AWOL from his prison in December 2023. His disappearance occurred during the opening of the Russian presidential election season in 2024.
Despite enormous challenges and a lengthy prison sentence, Navalny remains a powerful figure in Russia’s struggle against corruption and for political reform.
