Werner Stiller could be described as a German agent and defector who was born on August 24, 1947. It must be noted that between 1972 and 1979, Werner Stiller was a worker with the Ministry for State Security of the GDR and he was a first lieutenant. Later on, he switched to the Federal Republic and got attached to the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) using the code name ‘Machete’.
It has been mentioned that his defection from the GDR in 1979 goes down in history as one of the most spectacular espionage cases of the Cold War especially as he was able to defect with several secret documents.
He got admitted to the University of Leipzig in 1966. He studied Physics and graduated with a Diploma. He became an unofficial employee of the Stasi in 1979. This time around, his code name was ‘Stahlman’.
He subsequently worked in the Enlightenment Headquarters (HVA) of the Stasi, Science , Department 1, Technology Sector(SWT) as well as Department XIII from 1972 and his main responsibility was espionage in the field of nuclear technology in Germany.
Strangely, on January 19, 1979, Werner Stiller found his way to West Berlin after taking hold of some documents from the HVA which had to do with the service transfer of the Berlin Friedrichstrasse station. Werner Stiller left his wife and children in the GDR and as such they were subjected to various forms of abuse and harassment.
Interestingly, under a new identity, Werner Stiller in 1981 started a new life using the name Klaus-Peter Fischer born in Budapest. Werner Stiller had an economics degree from St.Louis with the help of the CIA. He worked as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs in New York and London. This was between 1983 and 1990. There was an attempt to kidnap him to the GDR and sentence him to death or kill him immediately in Western countries.

Werner Stiller was tracked down by a team of reporters in the early 1990s and that was when he was working as a stockbroker for Lehman Brothers. He moved to Budapest at the end of the 1990s. Werner Stiller died on December 20, 2016, in Budapest. He was 69 years old at the time of his death. The cause of his death is unknown.
