Werner Finck was a German Kabarett comedian, actor, and writer who rose to prominence as one of the country’s top cabaret performers under Nazi persecution after 1933.
Finck was born in Görlitz, Prussian Silesia, on May 2, 1902, and first studied art in Dresden before starting a career as a storyteller in the 1920s. It was around this period that he realised he had a gift for humour and realised the Berlin Kabarett scene was his actual calling.
In 1929, Finck co-founded the cabaret Die Katakombe with other performers. He was a thorn in the side of the Nazis because of his caustic and critical statements about them, and he frequently disobeyed orders by daring Gestapo informers to record his remarks.
In 1935, Finck and his fellow cabaret performers were detained in the Esterwegen detention camp despite their non-political intentions. They carried on performing in the camp, challenging the repressive government with comedy.
Finck performed for live audiences and in films after being freed. To escape being imprisoned, he joined the Wehrmacht’s military forces after being barred from the Reichskulturkammer in 1939.
Despite these difficulties, Finck returned to the cabaret scene following World War II and together with Hans Bayer, they co-founded the satirical publication Das Wespennest. In addition, he founded several cabarets, such as Mausefalle in Stuttgart and Nebelhorn in Zürich.
Throughout his life, Finck continued to give live performances, going on a US tour in 1968. He passed away on July 31, 1978, in Munich, where he is buried in the Waldfriedhof cemetery.
