Biography
Urban Cleve was born on November 24, 1930, in Dortmund, Germany. Before relocating to Saarland from 1935 to 1949, Cleve spent his formative years in Dortmund. His academic endeavors took him to high school in Neunkirchen (Saar) and then Moers, where he graduated with an Abitur from Adolfinum High School in 1952. His desire to learn more and his love of engineering drove him to RWTH Aachen University, where he majored in power and thermal engineering and completed his mechanical engineering degree in 1956.
His membership in the esteemed Corps of Montana Aachen during his university years attests to his engagement in both the intellectual and social domains. He studied business administration and economics at Heidelberg’s Ruprecht Karls University as part of his search for knowledge.
Cleve progressed through the ranks of the BBC/Krupp Reaktorbau GmbH, rising from operations engineer to head of the main technical department. His crucial contribution to the planning, building, and commissioning of the AVR (Jรผlich) reactor demonstrated both his technical proficiency and his leadership capacity. Nuclear technology advanced greatly during Cleve’s career thanks to his partnership with Rudolf Schulten, the creator of the high-temperature pebble pile-type reactor.
In recognition of his contributions, Cleve was awarded a doctorate in engineering by the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy at RWTH Aachen University in 1993, a testament to his dedication to his field.
Beyond his engineering pursuits, Cleve became embroiled in discussions surrounding the safety of pebble bed reactors, vehemently opposing safety concerns raised by whistleblower Rainer Moormann.
