Early Life and Education
Emil Meyerhöfer and Susanne Adlon were the parents of Thomas Meyerhöfer. He was also Louis Adlon’s grandson and the half-brother of Percy Adlon, a notable hotelier who was 15 years his senior, and Percy Adlon, a director. Meyerhöfer spent his early years in the charming town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where he was raised by a family that had a strong awareness of other languages and cultures.
As a result of the family’s weekend residence in Liguria, Italy, Thomas was able to develop his love of the language. From 1953 to 1970, Emil Meyerhöfer, the boy’s father, worked at the Garmisch High School as a Latin and Greek instructor and deputy director.
Thomas Meyerhöfer started on a road that first took him to Munich to study classical philology, German literature, and Italian studies after finishing his secondary education in 1969. But when he discovered radio journalism to be his true calling, his path took an unexpected turn.
Career
Thomas Meyerhöfer began working for Bayerischer Rundfunk, one of Germany’s top broadcasting companies, in 1973. He joined the freshly launched Bayern 3 station, where he was essential to several editorial parts including travel, service, and traffic reports. One of his standout accomplishments was his hosting position on the vehicle show “Gute Fahrt.”
Over the years, Meyerhöfer transitioned to the Time Radio department, where he took up the mantle of hosting magazine-style shows like “B3-Kurier.” He displayed a keen interest in the art of radio and an innate talent for connecting with his audience.
One of the defining moments of his career came when he served as the ARD correspondent in Rome from 1982 to 1985. His experience in Italy further deepened his appreciation for the Italian culture and language, which resonated in his work.
In 1985, Thomas Meyerhöfer returned to the Time Radio department at Bayerischer Rundfunk. He continued to enchant listeners with his insightful commentary and warm delivery.
Meyerhöfer assumed the position of chief moderator in 1989 and held it until he retired from Bayerischer Rundfunk on May 8, 2015, following 42 years of devoted service. In particular, during the early-morning transmission of the program “Radiowelt,” which he rotated with different presenters every week, he became a cherished voice for his listeners.
Meyerhöfer also presented the weekly German language program “Sozusagen!” and the literary program “Diwan” during his career. In addition, he oversaw the division that created shows including the daily “Tagesgespräch” on Bayern 2 and ARD-alpha. He also served as the department’s chairman.
