Ghana happens to be Africa’s representative on the UN Security Council and hence has a major role to play in the current Russia-Ukraine situation.
Over the past few days, Russia has constantly attacked Ukraine with world leaders and top organizations watching sternly. Disregarding warnings from The United States, Russia has sent airstrikes into Ukraine leading to turmoil in the country. Atleast two cities in Ukraine have been affected.
Most countries are on the brink of confusion as their citizens are held up in Ukraine. Ghana’s very own citizens in Ukraine are calling for an evacuation. Amidst the struggle, United Kingdom’s Minister to Africa; Vicky Ford is meeting Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to discuss instrumental interventions should the United Nations Security Council make an intervention.
Vicky Ford while announcing her presence in Ghana ahead of the meeting tweeted that; “In Ghana now for important meeting with Foreign Secretary @AyorkorBotchwey, a comember of #UNSC. It is clear that UK, Ghana and our allies stand together to respect sovereign nations and democracy, and are united against Russian aggression.”
Russia and Ukraine have been making headlines lately but no one expected things to escalate so soon. On Thursday, February,2024, Russia launched airstrikes into Ukraine. Russian President has also warned countries not to intervene or they will face serious and dire consequences they can’t handle.
