The literary world was forever changed by Sir Terence David John Pratchett OBE, who was born on April 28, 1948, in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England, and died on March 12, 2015. He was a prolific fantasy novelist, comedian, and satirist from Britain, known for his distinctive fusion of wit, satire, and comedic narrative. Even though he has written a variety of books, the 41-novel Discworld series is what made him a famous author.
Early Life and Education
He went to Holtspur School, where he experienced bullying because of his speech difficulties; this experience would later influence his work.
After passing the eleven-plus test and being accepted to High Wycombe Technical High School in 1958, his life took a big turn. He joined the debating society and wrote for the school magazine when he was a student there, becoming a prominent member. As a “non-descript” student, Pratchett modestly described himself as such and gave the Beaconsfield Public Library a lot of the credit for his education.
Pratchett’s interests extended beyond literature; he became fascinated by astronomy, acquired a telescope, and harbored aspirations of becoming an astronomer. His early reading included books by H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, and a wide range of literature, which he cherishedly viewed as “getting an education.” However, his path ultimately veered from this ambition owing to a lack of mathematics abilities.
Career
The first short story Terry Pratchett ever published, “Business Rivals,” appeared in the High Wycombe Technical School magazine in 1962, marking the beginning of his career as a writer. The spectacular career that would come after was preceded by this early foray into storytelling. When “The Hades Business” was published in the school journal at the age of 13 and then published commercially at the age of 15, his literary career took a more serious turn.
Pratchett completed five O-levels before beginning A-level coursework in history, English, and art. His primary field of study was journalism, and in 1965, when he was 17 years old, he dropped out of school to start an apprenticeship with Arthur Church, the editor of the Bucks Free Press.
He was appointed the Central Electricity Generating Board’s (CEGB) press representative in 1979, covering a region that included three nuclear power plants. Regarding the coincidence of his job choice with the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster in the United States, Pratchett frequently made lighthearted jokes.
