Facts About Telecom In Ghana

Preliminary to our main topic, let’s get some facts about telecommunication in Ghana.

  • In the year 1992, mobitel originated the first cellular phone in Ghana.
  • In the year 1992, Ghanaians who acquired mobile phones, summed up to 19,000 people.
  • Internet started in Ghana in August, 1995.
  • In the year 1998, the number of Ghanaians using mobile phones moved up to 43,000 people. 
  •  In the year 2000, a total of four cellphone companies were already competing each other and the number of phone users in Ghana moved up again to 132,000. 
  • In the year 2009, the cellular Industry got 15 million customers however, by the year 2012, the number of phone users exceeded 20 million in Ghana. Again, in 2009, internet users were 1.3 million and by the end of 2012, the number moved up to 4.2 million people.
  • The National Communications Authority (NCA) on 30th September, 2011 issued that, one must show an ID card before they can buy and use a sim card from a mobile network operator in Ghana.

Today, the Telecom sector in Ghana over the past decades, has been characterized with tremendous growth. Notwithstanding, it has become a very competitive sector.

1. SCANCOM GHANA – MTN GHANA

Scancom Ghana is owned and controlled by MTN group, a South African based telecommunication company that was founded in 1994 and operates in 21 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. They officially started running in Ghana after acquiring Investcom in 2006.

Since 31st December, 2019, Scancom Ghana have gotten about 20.1 million subscribers. They are the leaders in Ghana’s wireless telecommunication services Industry with about not less than 39% market shares. Again, they have large number of shareholders than any other company in Ghana.

2. Vodafone Ghana

Formerly known as Ghana Telecom, Vodafone Ghana was founded in 1974 and has its headquarters in Accra and it runs under Vodacom Group. They are the second leaders in Ghana’s wireless telecommunication services Industry.

The Government of Ghana on July 3, 2008, under the leadership of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, sold 70% of Ghana Telecom at an expense of US$900 million. Ghana Telecom and its subordinate phone dealer, oneTouch on April 15, 2009, rebranded its name to Vodafone. Vodafone, on December 2019, disclosed to the general public that, they’ve acquired all the Vodacom Group’s stake in Vodacom Business Ghana.

Vodafone Ghana provides various kinds of telecommunication services to their clients (mobile, fixed lines, internet, voice, data, broadband, financial and etc).

3. AirtelTigo Ghana

The first telecommunication company to operate in Ghana was Millicom Ghana Limited with the brand name, mobitel. However, it was later rebranded to Tigo. 

In 2017, based on the approval of the National Communications Authority, Airtel and Tigo merged. Currently, AirtelTigo Ghana have about 10 million subscribers in Ghana now. In recent news, the Government Of Ghana has acquired AirtelTigo Ghana. In this case, 100% of the company’s shares including its assets and its customers will belong to the Government of Ghana.

4. Globacom Limited Ghana – Glo Ghana

Mike Adenuga founded glo on 29th August, 2003. Glo is a Nigerian based telecommunication company with its headquarters in Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria. 

Glo officially started with its operations in Ghana after acquiring license in 2008 and the goal was to get 30% of the 11 million subscriber market within 3 months after its inauguration into the country.

Glo has won the hearts of many due to its internet connectivity (speed). Thanks to Glo 1, it’s high-capacity sub marine fibre-optic cable.

5. K-NET

K-NET was founded by KCS in 1996 and it was launched to serve the entire sub-Saharan Africa Region to provide connectivity solutions. The company is based in Accra- Ghana.
