Sylvie Meis’s Biography

Sylvie Meis was born on April 13, 1978, in Breda, Netherlands, to Dutch East Indies parents. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of West Brabant, popularly known as Hogeschool West-Brabant.

Meis decided to pursue a modelling career at the age of 18 and began working with numerous casting agencies. Her ability and beauty immediately garnered her recognition, and she began obtaining jobs for numerous photo projects.

Her focus quickly switched to television, and she became a famous face thanks to her appearances on FoxKids and the music channel TMF.

Meis presented various TMF events, including the annual TMF awards and interviews with worldwide singers such as Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue. She also appeared in music videos in the Dutch television series Costa. Meis also launched her own jewellery line, Pure by Sylvie, in the Dutch market.

Her celebrity skyrocketed after she hosted the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year award ceremony.

Meis was named the Netherlands’ sexiest female in 2003, which led to her dating Rafael van der Vaart, a prominent Ajax footballer at the time.

Their respective career achievements, along with their marriage in 2005, established them as the most recognised “football couple” in the Netherlands.

SBS6, a Dutch television channel, aired live coverage of their wedding, which received great ratings in the country. Meis adopted Rafael’s surname, van der Vaart.

Meis and her husband relocated to Germany when Rafael joined the Bundesliga football club Hamburger SV. They then relocated to Spain when Rafael joined Real Madrid in 2008. From 2008 to 2011, Meis was a judge on Das Supertalent, the German equivalent of Simon Cowell’s Got Talent series.

In 2010, she also appeared in the third season of Let’s Dance, the German equivalent of Strictly Come Dancing.

From 2011 to 2017, Meis continued her successful television career by co-hosting Let’s Dance with Daniel Hartwich. After being replaced on Let’s Dance, she returned to Das Supertalent as a judge in 2018.

Following in the footsteps of other well-known Dutch luminaries, Meis rose to become one of the most influential Dutch figures in the world.

Meis is of Indo-European origin in her personal life, with her father being Dutch-Indonesian and her mother being Belgian. She has been dating Rafael van der Vaart since 2003, and they married on June 10, 2005.

Damián Rafael, the couple’s son, was born on May 28, 2006. They divorced in December 2013, after allegations of infidelity and domestic abuse.

When Meis was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, she faced yet another obstacle. She had surgery and treatment, and she has been cancer-free ever since. Her cancer battle pushed her and Rafael closer together, as he stayed in Madrid to support her during her treatments.

Meis is trilingual, speaking English, Dutch, and German. Throughout her career, she has appeared in films on television and in the media in nations all over the world.

Meis has won various accolades, including Sexiest Female in the Netherlands in 2003 and Media Women of the Year in 2011. She shared the Bayerischer Fernsehpreis with Daniel Hartwich in 2012.
