Former president John Dramani Mahama and the 2020 flag bearer of the New Democratic Congress has reacted to the latest Supreme Court ruling which permits deputy speakers to vote while presiding as speaker.
The Supreme Court had earlier on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 presided over by Justice Jones Dotse passed a 7-0 unanimous verdict which validates Joe Wise’s voting to pass the 2022 budget while presiding as speaker as ethical and constitutional. The verdict will therefore allow subsequent deputies to do similar in cases as such.
Former president Mahama has thus bemoaned the judgement of Ghana’s apex court. According to him, the court’s ruling is “shocking but not surprising”.
He described the 7 – 0 decision by the Justice Jones Dotse-led panel as follows: “An unfortunate interpretation for convenience that sets a dangerous precedent of judicial interference in Parliamentary procedure for the future.”
