German theater and film actress Stella Harf (1890–1979) made her name as a leading lady in the country’s silent film industry in the late 1910s and early 1920s.

She frequently appeared in Ernst Reicher’s films, which included multiple silent mysteries starring the well-liked gentleman detective Stuart Webbs. Reicher is an actor, director, and producer.

Stella Harf was born as Johanna Gertrud Weybrecht in Dresden, Germany, in 1890.

In 1911, Harf made her stage debut as a chorus singer in Berlin theaters, frequently giving performances at the Metropol Theatre. She was married to actor, director, and producer Ernst Reicher from 1916 to 1923.

In Reicher’s class drama Die Fürstin von Beranien/The Princess of Berania (1918) (Ernst Reicher, 1918), Harf reprised her role opposite Kastner the next year.

In the grandiose performance Das Buch Esther (Ernst Reicher, Uwe Jenss Kraft, 1919), Harf played Queen Esther against Reicher as King Ahasverus and Michael Bohnen as Haman.

This two-hour epic silent German historical film is partially directed toward Jews and takes place in biblical antiquity.

In Reicher’s 1920 Stuart Webbs detective film Der Sprung ins Dunkle/The Leap in the Dark, Harf worked alongside Reicher. During the silent period, a fictional investigator named Stuart Webbs made several appearances in German serials and films.

Webbs was among several investigators from that era’s German films with English-sounding names. He was modeled after Sherlock Holmes, just as Joe Deebs and other contemporary figures.

Among the bunch, Webbs was the most well-liked. Ernst Reicher played Webbs in almost all of his films from his first series, which aired from 1914 to 1926.

Famous movie actress Stella Harf vanished from view following Ernst Reicher’s divorce in 1923. In 1921–1922, she acted in the movies Jägerblut and Der Schwur des Peter Hergatz.
