Born in Munich on July 4, 1965, Stefan Buchwald is a well-known German diplomat who has made major contributions to the subject of international relations. Since 2023, he has held the esteemed role of Ambassador to Benin.
Buchwald’s academic career started in 1984 at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, where he studied history, economics, and Romance languages.
He also continued his education during his undergraduate years, graduating from the Universitรฉ Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris in 1987 with a Licence des Etudes Franco-Allemandes. He finished his doctorate in 1992, demonstrating his love of learning.
Buchwald joined the German diplomatic service in 1991, marking the beginning of his diplomatic career. He received training at the Foreign Office’s Bonn – Ippendorf training facility before being sent on his first overseas posting, which was to the Embassy in Bucharest. During his time there, he obtained a great deal of expertise, and from 1994 to 1995, he worked as a consultant at the Foreign Office headquarters in Bonn.
Buchwald has occupied several important roles over his career, both domestically and internationally. From 1995 to 1998, he was employed at the embassy in Damascus. From 1998 to 2001, he oversaw the press department of the embassy in Lisbon.
Before serving as the ambassador’s permanent representative at the embassy in Sanaa from 2004 to 2007, Buchwald returned to work for the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin from 2001 to 2004. Then, from 2007 to 2010, he headed the economics division of the Egyptian embassy in Cairo.
