Sonja Engelbrecht’s family and friends have persevered in their search for justice and closure over the past several decades.
They hold onto the hope that, through continued investigation, the circumstances surrounding Sonja’s disappearance and death will be revealed, giving them the answers they so desperately seek.
Who Was Sonja Engelbrecht?
Sonja Engelbrecht was a young teenage woman who met a tragic fate on the night of April 10–11, 1995, in Munich, Germany.
Her abduction and subsequent recovery of her remains have left many unsolved concerns, and her death may have been a homicide.
Sonja went to a party on April 10, 1995, and was subsequently persuaded by an acquaintance to accompany him to a pub in Munich in the early hours of the morning. Sonja’s companion gave her a phone card so she could call her sister for a trip home while he intended to use the streetcar.
Sonja’s companion left her alone about two o’clock in the morning and proceeded to catch the streetcar, leaving her in an unknown area. Sonja, unfortunately, was never seen or heard from again. Concerns increased among Sonja’s loved ones, and it became clear that she had gone missing.
Sonja’s partner was later revealed to have visited a friend’s flat and informed the police that he had seen her alive that night at the Stiglmaierplatz tram stop in Munich. This claimed encounter, however, was Sonja’s final known communication or sighting.
Years passed with no important leads or breakthroughs in the Sonja disappearance inquiry. However, on November 23, 2021, forestry workers discovered a bone in a forest near Kipfenberg, Germany, during the summer of 2020. Sonja’s femur was subsequently identified through DNA research. This revelation rekindled interest in her case and prompted more inquiries.
On March 30, 2022, detectives stated that intense search efforts had resulted in the discovery of other bones and bone fragments near a gap near where Sonja’s femur was discovered. Among the remnants was a portion of the lower jaw with teeth that is currently being DNA-analyzed.
The investigators suspect that this crevice is where Sonja’s body was discovered. Surprisingly, the crevice is only approximately 200 metres from the femur, which was discovered in 2020.
Despite suspicions and allegations of foul play, Sonja’s death has not been ruled a murder, and the cause of her death is unknown. The investigation into Sonja Engelbrecht’s abduction and subsequent discovery of her remains is still ongoing, with authorities determined to learn the truth about what happened to her that fatal night in 1995.
