Slatan Theodor Dudow, a Bulgarian-born film director and screenwriter, was active in the Weimar Republic and East Germany, directing and writing several films between January 30, 1903, and July 12, 1963.
Dudow, who was born in Zaribrod, Bulgaria, moved to Berlin in 1922 with the intention of becoming an architect, but he ended up studying theater with Max Herrmann and Emmanuel Reicher.
He collaborated with Fritz Lang, Jürgen Fehling, and Leopold Jessner. In 1929, Dudow traveled to the Soviet Union and oversaw the staging of Brecht’s drama The Decision.
