Sepp Herberger was a footballer and manager whose legacy as one of the greatest football managers in German history lives on, and he will always be remembered for leading the West German team to their first World Cup victory in 1954.

Sepp Herberger’s Biography

Josef “Sepp” Herberger was a German footballer and manager best known for leading the West German national side to victory in the 1954 FIFA World Cup final, often known as The Miracle of Bern.

He was born on March 28, 1897, in Mannheim, Germany, into an impoverished Catholic farming family.

Herberger’s passion for football began at a young age, but he also worked at a local glass factory to help support his family. He played for the German national team three times between 1921 and 1925 before becoming Otto Nerz’s assistant coach in 1932.

Following Germany’s disastrous quarter-final loss to Norway at the 1936 Olympics, Herberger took over as national coach.

Following World War II, Herberger briefly served as temporary coach of Eintracht Frankfurt before returning to manage the national team in 1950.

He held this job until 1964 when he was replaced by Helmut Schön. Herberger had many successes during his coaching tenure, but none were more significant than the 1954 World Cup victory.

In the 1954 World Cup final, Germany met Hungary, the reigning Olympic champions and clear favourites. Despite being outscored in prior matches, Herberger’s tactics helped Germany win 3-2.

His choice to field a weaker team in the first match against Hungary misled the opposition about Germany’s true capabilities. Herberger also offered defensive support for Fritz Walter, allowing him to concentrate on attacking play.

Herberger’s football performances elevated him to legendary status in Germany. His quips, such as “After the game is before the game” and “The ball is round and the game lasts 90 minutes,” were well-known and were even included in films such as Run Lola Run and The Miracle of Bern.

However, his Nazi party membership in 1933 sparked debate when he was nominated to Germany’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. On April 28, 1977, Josef “Sepp” Herberger, 80, died of pneumonia.
